ANTELOPE CANYON, USA
The Antelope Canyon is located at the Navajo Tribal Park near Lake Powell in the State of Utah. It has two sections: the Upper Antelope Canyon / The Crack and the Lower Antelope Canyon / The Corkscrew. Most people usually go to the Upper Antelope Canyon as it requires no climbing. The more adventurous ones can opt to climb down to the Lower Antelope Canyon which is less crowded. You’ll need to climb down a stairway leading to the lower section and the path down there is narrower and longer.
After I departed from Las Vegas, I stayed overnight at Holiday Inn at St. George / Washington. The hotel has a cozy room with sufficient amenities and the staff are friendly.
The next morning after a hearty breakfast at the hotel, I continued my journey to Antelope Canyon.
Some of scenic sights on the way to the canyon.
A colourful banded hill.
Lake Powell in a distance.
Finally, arrived at Wal Mart which is the designated meeting point with the Antelope Canyon tour guides. The tour cost me USD 35 and was really worth it.
I took this opportunity to have a look inside Wal Mart which is the largest retailer in the world. Giant pumpkins, anyone? Reminds me of Halloween.
The Antelope Canyon tour jeeps arrived after a while.
Boarded the jeep and from Wal Mart, it was a half an hour drive to Antelope Canyon.
Welcome to Antelope Canyon.
Glad that I had my sunglasses on to protect my eyes from the sun and the sand. The jeeps had to go through rough terrains before reaching the entrance of Antelope Canyon.
The entrance of Upper Antelope Canyon.
Any antelopes around? Well there used to be herds of them roaming this area a long time ago, which explains the canyon’s name.
‘Tse bighanilini’, the Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon, which means ‘the place where water runs through rocks’ is more meaningful but I guess harder to pronounce.
I’ve seen so many enchanting photos of this place before but nothing beats being here myself.
I started clicking my camera.
The best time to visit Antelope Canyon is around noon when the sun light reached the bottom of the canyon.
My tour agency however picked the less crowded morning session. Most part of the canyon was still dark, so I was struggling at first to get enough light to take pictures.
After a while, I got the hang of it. Here are some of my best shots.
My favourite shot which includes me and my beau.
Can you see how small a person is when compared to the giant rock formation of Antelope Canyon?
The canyon walls rise up to 40 meters above the streambed.
The different layers of colours on the rock were simply stunning when shafts of direct sunlight radiating down from openings at the top of the canyon.
Some places are wide while others are narrow, barely allowing one person to walk through.
The crowd is everywhere! You should avoid the crowd whenever you can when taking photographs.
Antelope Canyon is categorised as a slot canyon, meaning a narrow canyon where it is significantly deeper than it is wide.
Coming out at the other end of Upper Antelope Canyon.
We stayed here for a while before heading back to the entrance using the same path.
Antelope Canyon is truly an awe inspiring sculpture set in stone.
Next up, Bryce Canyon!
