[NETHERLANDS] Rotterdam - Erasmusbrug
The Erasmus Bridge is the icon of Rotterdam. The bridge was designed by Ben van Berkel (1996) and because of its specific form was nicknamed “The Swan”.
I walked from Markthal to Erasmusbrug. It's about 15-20 minutes walk.
Passed by a Ramen restaurant called "Tensai" meaning 'genius'.
The port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe.
Actually the easier way of getting to Erasmus Bridge is taking the subway D & E line to Leuvehaven. Or take tram 8, 20, 23 & 25.
The Erasmus Bridge connects the northern and southern parts of Rotterdam. The 800m long suspension bridge has a 139m high steel pylon / tower mounted with 40 steel cables.
This is also where I took a water bus to visit the World Heritage Kinderdijk. In the background you can see the three linked towers – De Rotterdam
The bridge was named after Desiderius Erasmus. Who was Desiderius Erasmus? He was born in Rotterdam around 1469. He was a great scholar and humanist and had travelled around Europe. Famous works are his translation of the Bible and “Praise of Folly” about human nature. He died in 1536.
Back to Rotterdam Central Station to take the next train to Amsterdam.
Rotterdam Central Station itself has beautiful architecture too. It took nine years to construct and it cost 633 million euros. The station has a huge glass front and its distinctive shape is an eye-catcher.
