SAN FRANCISCO, USA - The Bridge

If you’re visiting San Francisco, be sure to check out the three landmarks that make the city world famous: The Bridge, the Bay and the Rock.
The Bridge is of course referred to the internationally recognised symbol of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge. The suspension bridge links the city of San Francisco to Marin County. Before the bridge was built, the only practical way to cross the sea between San Francisco and Marin County was by boat.

Going through the Golden Gate Bridge’s toll booth.

I am now officially in San Francisco.

There are 27,572 wires in each cable, unbelievable!

When completed in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world at 4,200ft and at a height of 746ft above water, the bridge had also the world’s tallest suspension towers.

Happy to actually see the bridge after seeing it only in pictures and in the movies.

That’s my beau.

The Golden Gate is often shrouded in fog. But lucky me, the weather was sunny and windy that day. I was able to view the whole bridge without being obscured by fog.

Making the impossible, possible. The history of the Golden Gate Bridge can be read in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Can’t have enough photo taken with the beautiful bridge.

It is one of the most famous bridge I know in the world and is certainly one of the most photographed bridge.

The skyscrapers of San Francisco can be viewed from the bridge.

The second most densely populated American city after New York. A relatively compact city, San Francisco is only 18km² and the fourth largest city of California.

Walking on the bridge itself to have a closer look is another pleasant experience, though you have to watch out for bicycle riders and skaters who shares the same route with the pedestrian.

That’s me on the bridge.

Overlooking the Golden Gate is the Presidio, a former military post with beautiful architecture and a very scenic park setting.

The statue of Joseph B. Strauss – the man who built the bridge.

Strauss was the chief engineer in charge of overall design and construction of the bridge.

Vision, Genius and Expert Care.

The chart indicates September to be the 2nd highest month for fog occurring at the Golden Gate. I’m so lucky that there was no fog on that day. Phew!

The American Institute of Steel Construction awarded the Golden Gate bridge as the Most Beautiful Steel Bridge.

This is an interesting and cool screen that changes as you view it from different angle. You can see how the bridge has evolved over the years as you walk from left to right.

Just below the bridge is Fort Point. Fort Point was built to protect San Francisco Bay from hostile fleets. It is the only Civil War era casemated fort on the West Coast. It was saved from demolition during the construction of the bridge.

The bridge is beautiful no matter where you snap your photo. It certainly deserves the title of “most beautiful steel bridge”.

Look, you can even see the Rock a.k.a. Alcatraz island if you’re lucky.

One last photo with the bridge before I leave.

The Golden Gate Bridge may not be the longest in the world and is just the 2nd longest in America, but is most certainly one of the most famous bridge in the world.

Let’s proceed to the city of San Francisco.

Entering the city area of San Francisco, you can see a lot of unique building along the road.

Lombard Street is famous for having a steep roadway that has eight sharp turns.

Many drivers purposely drive down the Lombard Street just to experience first hand how winding it is.

The ‘Crookedest Street in the World’ snakes down the Russian Hill.

The view on top of the hill is simply beautiful.

The St. Peter and Paul Church.

You can also rent a Go-car to travel around the city.

The speed limit in this section is just a mere 5 mph (8 km/h)!

Definitely a road congestion. No thanks. I prefer to walk up/down the street if you ask me.

Beautiful flowers are being planted on the street. Bill Cosby used to joke about it: “… they put flowers there where they've buried the people that have killed themselves. Lombard Street, wonderful street
.”

Hiking to the top of the hill was an uphill task literally but walking down is a breeze. There are many lovely houses lining the street.

A wall mural on the street.

If you are too lazy to hike up the hill, you can always take The Powell-Hyde cable car which stops at the top of this block.

There are also sightseeing hop on-hop off bus in the city.

A dog waiting for its master patiently in front of a lovely cafe.

Trees lining along the road provide perfect shades to the shops.

The weather is perfect just to relax and have a cup of coffee while enjoying the surrounding of San Francisco. I think I’ve already fallen in love with this charming city.
