It is where the foreman of Shida Kartil lived which is how the town got its name which means ‘the Lord’s Fortress’. Built on a high rocky left bank of Mtkvari river, it is notable for its unique combination of various styles of rock-cut cultures and the co-existence of pagan and Christian architecture.
