Ananuri is a castle complex situated on the foreland by Aragvi River, not far from Zhinvali Dam. Ananuri was built by the Dukes of Aragvi region and its earliest parts date from the 13th century.


Passed by an uncompleted Soviet era monument.


From Mtskheta we drive along the Georgian Military Highway where we passed by Zhinvali Dam and Reservoir.


The Zhinvali Dam built in 1986 is a hydroelectric dam.


The construction of the dam on the Aragvi River flooded the area forming the Zhinvali Reservoir.

The view of the lake from the side of the highway is simply breath taking.

A bridge was built across the Aragvi River to connect to Ananuri.


See the two columns protruding from the lake? That bridge used to the original crossing, now submerged in the lake as a result of the dam construction.

The complex features churches and towers dating back from the 13th century.




The fortification consist of two castles joined by a crenelated curtain wall. The upper fortification which is a large square tower, known as Sheupovari is well preserved. The lower fortification, with a round tower, is mostly in ruins.


There are two churches within the complex. The smaller Church of the Virgin dates from the first half of the 17th century. The walls was constructed using bricks and the interior is no longer decorated.


The larger Church of Assumption was built in 1689 for the son of Duke Bardzem. It has a central dome and richly decorated facade.
