DSC05909_thumb6Ananuri is a castle complex situated on the foreland by Aragvi River, not far from Zhinvali Dam. Ananuri was built by the Dukes of Aragvi region and its earliest parts date from the 13th century.

DSCF5970_thumbThe fortification consist of two castles joined by a crenelated curtain wall. The upper fortification which is a large square tower, known as Sheupovari is well preserved. The lower fortification, with a round tower, is mostly in ruins.


DSC05884_thumb_thumbThere are two churches within the complex. The smaller Church of the Virgin dates from the first half of the 17th century. The walls was constructed using bricks and the interior is no longer decorated.
