If the complicated train system in Kansai region is making you dizzy (see map above), guess what, you’re not alone. In this post, I will attempt to summarise the train services (approx. duration and fare) between Osaka and Kansai International Airport / other major cities (Wakayama, Nara, Kyoto, Kobe, Himeji) in the Kansai region.

KANSAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (KIX) TO OSAKA DSC06674

1) JR Haruka Limited Express
To Tennoji: approx. 35 min, 1,710 yen (Unreserved) / 2,200+ yen (Reserved)
To Osaka Station: approx. 45 min, 2,210 yen (Unreserved) / 2,700+ yen (Reserved)
To Shin-Osaka: approx. 50 min, 2,380 yen (Unreserved) / 3,000+ yen (Reserved)
* The Hello Kitty-themed train now stops at the "Umeda Underground" platforms of Osaka Station

2) JR Airport Rapid Train - Best for those on a budget who don't want to transfer.
To Tennoji: approx. 45 min, 1,060 yen
To Osaka Station: approx. 65 min, 1,190 yen

3) Nankai Limited Express Rapid - The fastest way to Namba.
To Namba Station: approx. 37 min, 1,490 yen (Standard)
* Digital tickets bought online via the Nankai website/Klook are often cheaper (approx. 1,350 yen).

4) Nankai Airport Express
To Namba Station: approx. 45 min, 970 yen

PASSES AVAILABLE FOR TRAVELLING TO/FROM KIX IN 2026

1) JR West Haruka One-Way Ticket (Digital)
The old "ICOCA & Haruka" combo was discontinued in late 2023 and replaced by the JR West Haruka One-Way Ticket. This is now a digital QR-based ticket for foreign tourists.

KIX to Tennoji: 1,300 yen
KIX to Osaka/Shin-Osaka: 1,800 yen
KIX to Kyoto: 2,200 yen
KIX to Kobe: 2,000 yen
KIX to Nara: 1,800 yen

Note: You must have a separate IC card (like ICOCA or Suica) or buy a separate base ticket if you aren't using this specific discount QR code.

2) Yokoso! Osaka Ticket
Includes Nankai Rapid (One-way) + 1-Day Osaka Metro Pass.
Price: 1,700 yen (Online) / 1,850 yen (In-person)
Osaka Metro 1-Day Pass (Standalone): 820 yen (Weekdays) / 620 yen (Weekends/Holidays).

KANSAI AREA RAIL PASS

1) Kansai Railway Pass (Replaces Kansai Thru Pass)

The "Kansai Thru Pass" was retired and replaced by the Kansai Railway Pass.
2-Day: 5,600 yen
3-Day: 7,000 yen

Coverage: Includes Nankai, Kintetsu, Hankyu, Hanshin, and Keihan railways.

Difference: It no longer covers Kyoto City Buses, but it covers the main private rail networks. It remains a flexible "non-consecutive" day pass.

2) JR Kansai Area Pass

2026 Prices (Consecutive Days):
1-Day: 2,800 yen
2-Day: 4,800 yen
3-Day: 5,800 yen
4-Day: 7,000 yen

Key Coverage:
Unlimited local and Rapid JR trains between Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, and Himeji.
Haruka Express: Includes reserved seats for the airport express from Kansai Airport (KIX).

Bonus: Includes a voucher for the Kyoto Subway and Keihan Railway (one-day use each), which is great for reaching areas like Gion or the Kyoto Imperial Palace.

Note: This pass does not cover the Shinkansen or other Limited Express trains (except the Haruka).

3) JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass

12,000 yen (Valid for 5 consecutive days).

Key Coverage:
Sanyo Shinkansen: Unlimited reserved seats between Shin-Osaka and Okayama (includes the Hello Kitty Shinkansen!).
Limited Express Trains: Includes reserved seats on the Haruka (KIX), Kuroshio (Wakayama/Shirahama), Kounotori (Kinosaki Onsen), and Super Hakuto (Tottori).

Extended Reach: Covers all the way to Takamatsu (Shikoku), Tottori, and the Kumano Kodo region (Shirahama/Kii-Katsuura).

Crucial Rule: It still does not cover the Shinkansen between Osaka and Kyoto (as that track is owned by JR Central, not JR West). You must use the Special Rapid service or a Limited Express train for that leg.

Which one should you choose?

Get the Kansai Railway Pass if you are staying in Osaka or Kyoto for a few days, want to use the subway or private lines like Hankyu (to Arashiyama) or Kintetsu (to Nara), and want the flexibility of skipping a day.

Get the JR Kansai Area Pass (3 or 4 days) if you are just doing day trips between Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Himeji. It's significantly cheaper than buying individual Haruka and Himeji tickets. The catch is it must be used on consecutive days.

Get the JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass if you are doing even one long-distance trip like Okayama, Kinosaki Onsen, or Shirahama. A single round-trip from Osaka to Okayama or Kinosaki Onsen normally costs about 12,500 yen, meaning the pass is "free" after just one outing. Like the Kansai Area Pass, it is for consecutive days only (5 days).

INTERCITY TRAIN SERVICES

OSAKA-WAKAYAMADSC06678
1) JR Kinokuni Line (Kuroshio Limited Express)
The Kuroshio remains the fastest and most comfortable way to reach Wakayama, though all seats are now reserved.
From Shin-Osaka Station: Approx. 60–65 minutes, 2,830 yen (Base fare + Reserved seat fee).
From Tennoji Station: Approx. 45–48 minutes, 2,430 yen (Base fare + Reserved seat fee).

2) JR Hanwa Line (Kishuji Rapid Service)
The best budget-friendly JR option. No limited express fee is required.
From Tennoji Station: Approx. 65–75 minutes, 900 yen

3) Nankai Main Line
The primary choice if you are starting from the Namba/Minami area.
From Namba Station to Wakayamashi Station (Southern Limited Express): Approx. 60 min, 970 yen
Optional Upgrade: Add 700 yen (total 1,670 yen) for a reserved seat on the Southern Limited Express.

* JR Wakayama Station and Nankai Wakayamashi Station are about 2 km apart.
** JR Kisei Line Link: The local shuttle train connecting these two stations takes about 5 minutes and costs 190 yen.

OSAKA-KYOTODSC07447
1) JR Shinkansen
Shin-Osaka to Kyoto: 14 min, 1,450 yen (Unreserved)
Still the fastest way, but remember it departs from Shin-Osaka, not central Osaka (Umeda). If you are already at Osaka Station, the time saved by the Shinkansen is often lost in the transfer.

2) JR Special Rapid Service
Osaka to Kyoto: 29 min, 580 yen, runs every 15 min.

3) Hankyu Kyoto Line
Umeda to Kawaramachi: 44 min, 410 yen
Best if your destination is the Gion or Pontocho district.
Hankyu has also expanded its "Privace" (Private + Place) reserved seating cars on this line, which cost an additional ~500 yen surcharge for a guaranteed, luxury seat.

4) Keihan Main Line
Yodobashi to Gion-Shijo: 50 min, 430 yen
Best choice if you plan on visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine or Kiyomizu-dera first.

OSAKA-NARADSC07264
1) JR Nara Line
1) JR Yamatoji Rapid (Osaka to Nara): 50 min, 820 yen
2) Kintetsu Nara Line (Namba to Kintetsu-Nara): 40 min, 680 yen

OSAKA-KOBEDSC07311
1) JR Kobe Line (Osaka to Sannomiya): 22 min, 420 yen
2) Hanshin/Hankyu Lines: approx. 30 min, 330 yen

OSAKA-HIMEJIDSCF1032
1) JR Shinkansen (Bullet Train)
The fastest way to travel, departing from Shin-Osaka Station.
Shin-Osaka station to Himeji station: approx. 29 min, 3,280 yen (Non-reserved seat).
Note: Reserved seats typically cost between 3,800 and 4,500 yen depending on the season and whether you use the Nozomi, Mizuho, or Sakura services.

2) JR Kobe Line (Special Rapid Service)
The most popular balance of speed and cost, departing from JR Osaka Station (Umeda area).
Osaka station to Himeji station: approx. 65 min, 1,520 yen
Note: This is a "Standard" train, so no seat reservations are required (or possible) on the Special Rapid unless you opt for the "A-Seat" (reserved seating car) available on certain runs for an additional fee of about 840 yen.

3) Hanshin Main Line + Sanyo Electric Railway Main Line
The "scenic" and budget-friendly private railway route.
Osaka-Umeda station to Nishidai station + Sanyo Electric Railway Main Line: Nishidai station to Sanyo-Himeji station (total approx. 95 min, 1,350 yen)
Hanshin-Namba station to Nishidai station + Sanyo Electric Railway Main Line: Nishidai station to Sanyo-Himeji station (total approx. 110 min, 1,410 yen)

* If you are doing a round trip in one day, look for the "Hanshin-Sanyo Seaside 1-Day Ticket" (approx. 2,400 yen), which offers unlimited rides between Osaka and Himeji and is significantly cheaper than two one-way tickets.

** If you have the JR Kansai Area Pass, the JR Kobe Line (Special Rapid) is included, but the Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Himeji is not (that requires the more expensive Kansai WIDE Area Pass).

OSAKA-KOYASAN
1) Nankai Koya Line:
Namba to Koyasan (via Cable Car): approx. 120 min, 1,510 yen
Look for the Koyasan Digital Ticket on the Nankai app for a round-trip discount including the bus on the mountain.

2026 Travel Tips
1) Most gates in Osaka (Metro and Nankai) now accept Contactless Visa/Mastercard. You can often tap your credit card or phone instead of buying a ticket or IC card.

2) Many passes (like the Haruka One-Way) are now strictly digital. You'll receive a QR code to be scanned at the ticket machines with passport scanners at KIX to redeem your physical ticket.

I hope this guide has been useful to you in planning the transport in Kansai region. Do not hesitate to let me know if I made any mistakes or you have anything to add on to the guide. Thank you for reading.
