[IRAN] Shiraz - Eram Botanical Garden
Established during the Saljughid Dynasty (1037-1193), Eram Garden is a historic Persian Garden inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Heading towards the entrance.
Those days it was called the king’s garden. Actually, the Eram Garden is inscribed in the World Heritage Site together with eight other Persian Gardens across Iran.
After changing of hands between rulers and noble family, the garden now belongs to the government and Shiraz University was appointed in charge of the garden in 1963.
A 13th century building in the middle of the garden.
The two storey building housed 32 rooms.
If you look closer at the building, you will see tiles designs of historical, poems and legendary figures.
A carving of Achaemenid soldier on the wall.
Too bad the house remains locked to visitors.
Time to take a stroll around the garden.
The city of Shiraz is considered by many Iranians to be the city of gardens.
Some local girls enjoying their time under the shade.
So you know where the word paradise comes from? Paradise comes from the Persian root word Pardis, which was the name of a beautiful garden enclosed behind walls.
The creation of of the Persian Garden was made possible due to intelligent and sophisticated irrigation system.
To be honest, Eram Botanical Garden is not one of the best or biggest garden I’ve been too. The garden is pretty ordinary. The reason why Eram Garden is listed as a World Heritage Site is because of its historical significance. The Persian gardens have their roots in the time of Cyrus the Great (6th century BC) and have influenced the art of garden design as far as Spain.
Some of buildings in the garden has been converted as a cafe or souvenir shops
Bought some Shiraz souvenir here.
Time to leave.
