[GERMANY] Frankfurt City Tour

Frankfurt, the largest city in the German state of Hesse, is also the financial capital of Germany and has the busiest German airport. Most notably, Frankfurt is home to European Union Central Bank and the German Stock Exchange.

To be honest, I didn't spare much time in Frankfurt. I basically stayed overnight in Frankfurt after attending the Oktoberfest in Munich and spent some time in the morning to explore the city before heading to Cologne around 10am.

I stayed overnight at Iblis Frankfurt Centrum which is just 5-minutes walk away from the Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof train station.

I started the day by heading to Eurotower (subway stop Willy-Brandt-Platz) and ended the tour at Römerberg and Frankfurt Cathedral (subway stop Dom/Romer) . See my tentative walking map as reference above. It's about 15 minutes walk but it actually took longer than that due to sight-seeing.

Getting around is quite easy with the subway.

Willy-Brandt-Platz is the modern part of the city where you'll see skyscrapers like Eurotower.

The Eurotower only served as the seat of ECB until 18 March 2015 and is officially replaced by a new tower in the eastern part of Frankfurt. Regardless, it still remain as a favourite tourist spot, thanks to its huge Euro sign.

Next, I headed towards Eiserner Steg which is a pedestrian bridge spanning the river Main.

This bridge is a popular place to lock love locks.

It also offers excellent view of Frankfurt skyline.

Passed by Historisches Museum Frankfurt.

Passed by a pretty square on the way to Römerberg.

Arriving at Römerberg.

A number of the historical buildings in Römerberg were unfortunately destroyed during World War II. The medieval buildings that we see today is mostly reconstructed.

Right next to the square is the Old St. Nicholas Church.

The Römer is the town hall of Frankfurt.

St Paul's Church.

It was pleasant to stroll in the old city in the morning, which was quiet and empty.

Frankfurt Cathedral is called simply the Dom, due to its importance as former election and coronation church of the Holy Roman Empire. As much as 30 elections were held here and 10 emperors of Holy Roman Empire were crowned in this cathedral.

Back to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof train station to catch my train to Cologne.

Personally, I find Frankfurt a very diverse city, as you can find its historical old center of Römer and its futuristic skyline side by side. I really wouldn't mind spending more time in this city if time allows me to.
