[MALAYSIA] Kuala Selangor Eagle Feeding, Firefly & Blue Tears Tour

Kuala Selangor (approximately an-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur) is a small town where the Selangor River meets the sea. It is also where you can see the fireflies by boat. Besides seeing fireflies, we joined a local tour which also includes eagle feeding and blue tears which lasted about 3 hours.

Getting there:

The easiest way is to drive to Kuala Selangor. There is no public transport in the town but it is easy to walk around. Map of Kuala Selangor with attractions marked above.

The hotel that we stayed overnight was Hotel Le-Shore. Parking was a bit tough due to limited parking space. Otherwise, I have no complains about the hotel. A quadruple room (two double bed) with river view cost around RM280.

Be sure to book the river view room. The room has a lovely balcony overlooking the Selangor River. 

The hotel has a bigger balcony in the common area which can be accessed by hotel guest.

We reached Kuala Selangor around 2pm. After checking in to the hotel, we went to a nearby  restaurant, River View Seafood Restaurant, for lunch. It's just a 2-minute walk from the hotel.

We ordered fried soft-shell crab (minimum order 3 piece), Kung Pao styled mantis shrimps, Marmaid chicken, hot plate tofu and fried Kangkung belacan. All dishes were delicious and the bill came about only RM125 including rice and drinks. 

Since we still had some time to kill before joining the tour, we decided to visit a temple nearby the jetty. The temple is called Qi Jian Xian Shi Fo Zu Gu Miao Temple. The temple has a pair of grand staircases leading up to the top floor. The main prayer hall is on the ground floor.

In the evening, the tour started at 6pm at a designated jetty. It is cheaper to book the tour online than on-site. I booked the tour on Agoda. The jetty was located next to Monkey God Temple and a local seafood restaurant. The big boat is actually a floating restaurant, not our boat for the tour, haha.

The boat head off towards mouth of Selangor River where the boat operator fed the eagles from the boat. The eagles were hovering above the boat before swooping down the river to snatch up their food. The boat went a few rounds for the feeding before heading back to the jetty. 

The sunset view was stunning that day.

We had a short toilet break at the jetty before boarding the boat to see the fireflies around 7pm. They were mostly resting on the mangrove trees and gently blinked on the trees. We did not take any photographs during the fireflies sightseeing as flash lights are not allowed and it was pitched black. The tour guide imitated the flashing of fireflies with a torchlight to attract them to fly into the boat so that visitors could try to let them rest on fingers or palm to see them up-close. I had one rest on my fingers momentarily before flying away. My boys were really excited to see the fireflies.

After the fireflies sighting, the boat headed to the sea where we could the mysterious 'blue tears'. The blue lights were emitted by bioluminescent planktons. We were given a long stick with net to try to scoop some planktons. We were told to shake the net in order to see the 'blue tears'. The experience was a bit underwhelming as the 'blue tears' were not as bright as I expected. 

By the time the tour finished around 9pm, we were famished. We had dinner at the restaurant besides the jetty, which I don't want to name. That was the worst meal we had during entire 4D3N trip.
