JAPAN – Himeji Castle
Himeji Castle is considered one of Japan’s most spectacular castle. It was never destroyed in wars, earthquakes or fires. I dared say this oriental castle is equally breath-taking as its western counterpart.Hiroshima Airport Hotel has a very big compound and garden. The trees were changing colours as it was already autumn.
There is even a lake in the garden. The morning air was chilly and crisp after rain.
Hey, fishy-fishy.
Enjoying a walk in the Zen-like garden.
Preparing to leave to Himeji.
Had a bento for lunch before we explored the Himeji Castle.
Unfortunately major renovation works were being carried out during the time we visited the castle. A large scaffold structure is being erected to cover the entire main castle.
Taking a photo with the friendly “castle gate guard”. Actually he is a local volunteer who poses as a castle guard during his free time.
Another two guards who were also volunteers.
Err, don’t know where this guy comes from? Don’t ask.
Most other parts of the castle are still accessible to tourist.
The castle’s main gate.
The “Three Country Moat” in the centre of the castle complex.
A depiction of the castle complex.
Taking photo with two traditional dressed volunteers.
Defensive loopholes on the walls to allow defenders to fire on attackers without exposing themselves.
These loopholes are designed in such a way that it’s bigger on the inside and smaller on the outside.
Angled chutes or “stone dropped window” enables stones or boiling oil to be poured on to the heads of attackers passing by underneath.
The family crest of the royal family.
The confusing maze of paths leading to castle’s keep is one of the major defence to throw off intruders.
A type of Sakura flowers blooming in November.
The door height of one of the doors is so low. Maybe they hope to knock off unsuspected intruders. Haha.
The hallway inside the castle.
A card game played in the castle.
You’ve to remove your shoes and wear slippers while walking in the castle complex.
Next, we’re heading to Osaka. Stay tuned.
