volendam
Volendam is the most well-known fishing village in Holland, which lies 20 km north of Amsterdam. It is a popular tourist destination, known for its colourful wooden house and old fishing boats in its harbour.

Getting there:

You can get there by taking bus 312 or 316 from Amsterdam. From Edam, take either bus 118 or 316. Once getting down at Prinses Margrietstraat bus stop, you can see the Volendam Museum just across the road.

Follow the crowd and you can easily get to the harbour of Volendam.

You can try on the traditional Volendam clothing and take photo wearing it. It's a cheesy touristy thing to do but it could be fun. If I'm not travelling alone, I would definitely do it.

There are quite a few bronze statues at Volendam, this one is depicting a local fisherman with his catch.

When I say it's a touristy village, the crowd is no joke, more so during summer. But it's not necessary a bad thing.

Just be prepared that you'll have lots of passer-by in the background when you're taking photo.

This restaurant is famous for its Dutch stroopwaffles with various toppings.

They all look delicious!

But I'm actually here for its fish - eel, herring or kibbeling (fried fish). This is the fish truck that I tried.

DSC09750
Kibbeling is more to my taste. I tried it for 4 euros.

They also sell Lekkerbek (deep fried cod fish). 'Lekker' means tasty in Dutch.

And indeed the kibbeling was quite delicious, especially when it's freshly fried.

You can take the Marken Express ferry to Marken, another fishing village from Volendam.

There are frequent boats connecting the two harbours.

There are many shop selling cliche Dutch souvenirs.

I was really tempted to buy one of those Dutch house miniatures. They look so cute when put together.

DSC09759
The unconventional souvenir would be jellyfish glass.

DSC09760
Volendam also has a small beach.

Wooden tulips sold at one of the shops.

You can also buy tulip seeds if you want to.

You can see clog making demonstration at Wooden Shoes Factory.

Plenty of restaurants too if you want to grab a bite.

DSC09763
Volendam also has a cheese factory which is a cheese factory and museum rolled into one.

Freshly made cheese are available for tasting and purchase.

The cheese making demonstration is at the lower ground floor.

The cheese making process - the milk which arrives at the factory is centrifuged, during which the milk and cream is separated. The milk which remains after the centrifuge process serves as the basis for the cheese.

Cheese and more cheese. Unfortunately, I'm not a cheese person.

The back lane has some cute houses.

With that, I left Volendam and headed to my next destination - Marken.
