[TAIWAN] TAICHUNG - 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan
921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan (921地震教育園區) stands not just as a memorial to the devastating 921 Earthquake, but as a frozen moment in time. Built directly on the site of the former Guangfu Junior High School, the museum preserves the exact spot where the Chelungpu Fault ripped through a running track and collapsed classrooms like a deck of cards. The museum is such a gem!
Getting there:
From Taichung Train StationDirect Bus: Take Bus 50 from the station area. It's a convenient direct route that takes approximately 50 minutes, dropping you off directly at the museum.
Alternative Bus: You can also take Bus 107 or 200, which stop at the Kengkou Village (Guangfu Community) stop. From there, it is a 10–15 minute walk along Xinsheng Road to reach the entrance.
Taxi: A taxi ride from Taichung Station is the fastest option, typically taking about 16–20 minutes depending on traffic.
From Taichung High Speed Rail (HSR) Station
HSR Shuttle Bus: Take Bus 151 from Platform 14. This is often cited as the "best" public transit option from the HSR station, taking about 30–50 minutes.
Arrival Stop: Get off at the Kengkou Village (Guangfu Community) stop and follow the signs for a 10–15 minute walk to the museum.
Taxi: A taxi from the HSR station takes roughly 15 minutes and is a great choice for groups or those with limited time.
What to See:
A model of globe showing the famous Pacific "Ring of Fire".
The before and after earthquake photo of the mountains show a stark contrast.
The ruins of the former Kuang-Fu Junior High School, which was severely damaged by the quake, is preserved on the site and serves as a powerful reminder of nature's force. Visitors can walk along elevated walkways that afford views of the collapsed and tilted classrooms of the Kuang-Fu Junior High School buildings.
Chelungpu Fault Gallery is the centerpiece of the museum. The Chelungpu Fault ruptured during the earthquake, running directly under the school's sports field. The gallery preserves a section of the field, where you can see the running track and basketball courts dramatically buckled and uplifted by the fault line, with an offset of up to 2.5 meters in places.
The Image Gallery showcases photographs, audiovisual materials, and historical records that document the disaster, the search and rescue efforts, and the subsequent recovery and reconstruction process.
Don’t forget to visit the Earthquake Experience Theater where you can safely feel a simulation of the 7.3 magnitude quake. Overall, the museum is really interesting and informative. Would recommend to anyone visiting Taichung.
