[TAIWAN] YILAN - A Guide to Toucheng Old Street
Toucheng was once the economic heartbeat of Yilan. Its proximity to Wushi Harbor made it a massive distribution center for goods. However, a series of floods in the 1920s and the development of the railway eventually shifted the trade elsewhere, leaving Heping Street frozen in a beautiful state of decay and quiet preservation.
Getting There: It’s an easy 5-minute walk from the Toucheng TRA Station.
It was a rainy day during our visit. We almost had the whole place to ourselves.
Known as the "First Street of Kailan," this 600-meter stretch is the oldest commercial street in the Lanyang Plain. It offers a much quieter, more authentic glimpse into Yilan's past, where the architecture tells the story of a once-prosperous port town that time eventually moved past.
Walking from the North to the South Gate, you'll see a fascinating mix of styles.
At both the north and south ends of the street, you’ll find Earth God (Fude) Temples. Historically, these were built to "lock in" the wealth of the street.
The newer 3D murals and "Literature Alleys" tucked between the ancient buildings were perfect for our Instagram shots without the usual crowds.
Don't miss the delicious xiaolongbao at 吉祥鮮肉小籠包 in Toucheng. Their dumplings are famous for their heavy use of local Samsung green onions, which give the filling a sweet, aromatic punch. They run on a number system. Grab your number first, then wander a bit if the wait is long.
Unfortunately, Dragon Beef Noodles (龍記牛肉麵) which is located just down the same street (Jixiang Road) was closed during that day. It is arguably the most famous beef noodle shop in Yilan. Otherwise, I would recommend to try both while in Toucheng.
