Located in Toucheng, Yilan, this architectural marvel is more than just a place to store artifacts; it’s a tribute to the land itself. Whether you’re an architecture geek, a history buff, or just someone looking for that perfect Instagram shot, here is why Lanyang Museum belongs on your Yilan itinerary.

Getting There: Take the train to Toucheng Station. From there, it’s a 20-minute walk or a quick 5-minute taxi ride.

The first thing you’ll notice is the building's striking silhouette which looks like a giant shard of glass and stone erupting from the wetlands. Designed by renowned architect Kris Yao, the museum is inspired by the cuesta rock formations common along the Beiguan coast.

The museum is intelligently laid out across four floors, each representing a different aspect of the region’s ecology and culture. The permanent exhibition is arranged top-down, with each floor represents a different ecological elevation. 

The Mountain Level (Floor 4) focuses on Yilan's mountainous terrain, misty forests, and diverse biodiversity. 

The Plains Level (Floor 3) showcases the rivers, agriculture, and daily life of the Lanyang Plains, emphasizing the relationship between residents and water. 

The Ocean Level (Floor 2) dives into Yilan's maritime culture, fishing industry, and the influence of the ocean and the Kuroshio Current. 

The Time Gallery (Floor 1) is a walk through the historical timeline of Yilan, from its indigenous roots to modern-day development. 

If you're bringing kids, arrive early and don't miss the Archaeological Kid's Land on the first floor. It’s an interactive space where children can play at being little archaeologists, digging for "relics" and learning about prehistoric Taiwan.
The museum sits right next to Wushi Harbor. I would recommend having a seafood lunch nearby the harbour like we did. The restaurant we went is Happiness No. 36 Seafood Restaurant (幸福36號海鮮餐廳). Price of the seafood is reasonable and portion is big.

You can also consider joining a whale watching tour or taking a boat out to the iconic Guishan (Turtle) Island after your museum visit.

Operating Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Ticket sales close at 4:30 PM).
Closed Day: Every Wednesday (open on national holidays).
Admission fee: NT$100 per adult (for the Permanent Exhibition), NT$50 per child.
