[TAIWAN] 7-Day Epic Adventure Through Taiwan's North (Taipei, Taichung and Yilan)

From bustling night markets and majestic natural landscapes to charming old streets and relaxing hot springs, Taiwan offers an experience for every type of traveler. I just completed an exhilarating 7-day journey across Taipei, its stunning northern coasts, and the tranquil hot spring haven of Yilan.

TRANSPORTATION

It is recommended to buy the EasyCard (悠遊卡) via Klook and collect it at the airport. The card cost NT$100 (non-refundable) and you can choose the top up amount. You can purchase and top up an EasyCard at any MRT station or convenience store. Photo above is the Taipei Main Station. It is the primary transportation hub in Taipei, serving as a massive multi-level complex for the High-Speed Rail (HSR), local trains (TRA), Taipei Metro (MRT), and the Airport MRT.

One-way MRT from Taoyuan to TMS cost NT$160. This card can be used for public transport (MRT, buses & TRA trains) and small purchases at convenience stores across Taiwan. Best of all, you automatically receive discounts (often around 10-20%) on many MRT and bus fares, and often get transfer discounts when switching between MRT and buses within a specific time frame.

MRT: Taipei is well connected by MRT network. You can reach most tourist attractions by MRT. Above is the Taipei MRT network map.

Be prepared to walk up or down a lot of staircase at the MRT stations as some exits don’t have escalators or lifts.

Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) official website: https://en.thsrc.com.tw/

Klook offers Buy 1 Get 1 Free (Special Foreign Visitor Promo) for one-way THSR southbound tickets. If you buy the ticket online through the official website, you can get early bird discount (10% - 35%) as soon as the ticket is opened for booking 29 days in advance. If you plan to take multiple long-distance THSR rides, a pass is often the best value for short-term foreign visitors. The usual one-way ticket price for THSR (Taipei - Taichung) is NT$700 per adult, NT$350 per child.

Remember that you need to redeem the paper tickets in advance by showing your booking at the counter or machines. I did so at the Taipei Main Station. Alternatively, you can download T Express app if you prefer paperless ticket.

This is Taiwan's main conventional railway network for for inter-city travel, local commutes. You can use the EasyCard for Local Trains (區間車), Fast Local Trains (區間快), and sometimes Chu-Kuang trains with non-reserved seats. Tickets for most trains can be booked online 29 days in advance. The usual one-way ticket price for TRA express train (Taipei - Jiaoxi) is NT$281 per adult, NT$141 per child. TRA official website: https://tip.railway.gov.tw/tra-tip-web/tip?lang=EN_US

TAXI: Uber is available in major cities like Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, etc. Always have cash for taxis, as credit card acceptance is not universal. Taxi drivers often have limited English. It is highly recommended to have your destination written in Chinese characters or show the address on your phone/map app. If all else fails, ask a local to help to call a taxi for you.

What you need to know: Cash is still king in Taiwan. So do bring enough cash as many stores and restaurants don’t accept credit card.

ACCOMODATION

We stayed 4 nights at an Airbnb apartment in Taipei. The apartment is clean and comfortable with 3 double beds. Location near TMS is unbeatable, a perfect hub for our day trips and city explorations. Umbrellas are provided for guests - a big help to us as it was raining non-stop in Taipei during our visit. The cost for four nights is approximately NT$ 12100.

We stayed a night in Jiaoxi at Gamalan Breeze Hotel (葛瑪蘭風呂會館). The cost for one nights including buffet breakfast is approximately NT$3240. Location is very closed to the Jiaoxi train station. This hotel is really a bargain. The family room has two double beds. It is modern and clean, complete with a hot spring bathtub.

Guests can also enjoy voucher to boil food in hot spring, fish spa, and hot spring facilities.

On our last night in Taipei, as we needed to store our luggage, we chose Morwing Hotel Fairytale (清翼居童話館). Guests can refill their bottles at the reception lobby. It is a no-fuss budget hotel. Room is small. Only triple room was available and I have to pay NT$300 for additional one child. The cost for one nights is approximately NT$ 4041. I still prefer the Airbnb apartment.

FOOD

Taiwan's night market is the best place to sample their street food. I went to two of their famous night market:  Raohe Street Night Market and Shilin Night Market.

Raohe Street Night Market is famous for Fuzhou Shizu Pepper Bun, Chen Tung Pork Ribs, Ming Peng Xia Gang Stinky Tofu and many more.

Shilin Night Market, on the other hand, is famous for Stalwart Pork Sausages, Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken, Bin's Grilled King Oyster Mushrooms and many more. It is also a good place to shop for souvenirs such as penis-shaped soft toy and quirky t-shirts.

For a typical local breakfast (soy milk + youtiao / egg crepe), head to Sihai Soy Milk (四海豆漿) near TMS.

These are the big-four dishes you should try at least once while in Taiwan:
1) Beef Noodle Soup
2) Braised Pork Rice
3) Oyster Omelet
4) Sanbeiji (Three Cup Chicken)

Lao Shandong Homemade noodles 老山东牛肉面 in Ximending is highly recommended for its flavourful beef soup and its chunky beef cubes. Opening hours: 10.30am-9.30pm

If you want to try authentic Taiwanese dishes all at once, I highly recommend Jin Zhu restaurant.  It was by far the best meal we had in Taiwan. Even the white rice was fluffy and cooked to perfection. Their Sanbeiji (三杯雞) and stirred fried water lily are must-try dishes. They have a few branches in Taipei.

Jin Zhu (真珠) restaurant
Opening hours: 11:30 AM - 3:00 PM (last order for lunch is 2.30pm), 5:30 PM - 9:30PM (last order for dinner is 9pm) for weekdays
11:00 AM - 4:00 PM (last order for lunch is 3.30pm), 5:00 PM - 9:30PM (last order for dinner is 4.30pm) for weekends

Xiaolongbao is a popular dish in Taiwan. While Din Tai Fung is the popular chained restaurant famous for their xiaolongbao, I tried the dish at a local store,吉祥鮮肉小籠包-頭城店 in Yilan.

Dinner at 空ㄟ農場, a hilltop restaurant offering spectacular night views over Yilan, was unforgettable. Highly recommended!

Do not leave Taiwan without sampling their bubble tea. Invented in Taichung in the 1980s, it’s now a multi-billion dollar cultural export. What better place to try it other the original shop where bubble tea was invented?

Be sure to make a stop at the Miyahara, former ophthalmology clinic, if you're visiting Taichung. Now, it's a stunningly preserved, Harry Potter-esque dessert parlor famous for its incredible ice cream, chocolates, and pastries. The presentation is as beautiful as the building itself! (Hours: 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM)

If you feel like splurging, A Joy buffet will not disappoint. Located on the 86th floor of Taipei 101, it is the highest and most luxurious buffet in Taipei (approximately NT$3280 per adult). Reservations are notoriously difficult to get and must be booked weeks in advance.

My souvenirs from my trip to Taiwan.

With full hearts and heavy suitcases, we headed to the airport for our mid-night departure back home.
