If you’re looking to escape the neon hum of the city for something a bit more atmospheric, the Dakengli (大坑里) coastline in Toucheng, Yilan offers a perfect blend of brutalist charm and serene ocean views. At the heart of this coastal stretch stands the Octagonal Observatory Tower (八角瞭望台), a structure that has transitioned from a functional maritime lookout to one of the most Instagrammable "hidden gems" on the coast.

After lunch, we spent the afternoon relaxing by the octagonal observatory tower and the Dakengli beach side.

The tower itself is a masterclass in geometric intrigue. Looking up (or down) through the center of the tower reveals a mesmerizing hollow core. The repeating octagonal lines create a "tunnel vision" effect that feels almost cinematic.

Once we climbed to the top of the tower, it offers an unobstructed 360 degree vantage point of the coastline.

Just a short walk from the tower lies the Dakengli beach side. Unlike the nearby Wai’ao Beach, which is a magnet for surfers and crowds, Dakengli remains a quiet residential and fishing community. The most popular cafe in the area is Maison de Ocean (满山望海). The beach here is famous for its fine black volcanic sand and smooth pebbles. It creates a stunning contrast against the white sea foam.

Afterwards, we hailed a taxi and headed back to Jiaoxi for dinner.
