[MALAYSIA] Day Trip to Pulau Ketam

If you’re looking to escape the hustle of Kuala Lumpur, Pulau Ketam (Crab Island) is the perfect remedy. This rustic fishing village, perched on stilts above mangrove swamps, offers a salty, soulful retreat that feels worlds away from the city that’s just a ferry ride from Port Klang.

Getting there:

To reach Pulau Ketam, you must first head to Port Klang and take a ferry to the island.

By KTM Train: Take the KTM Komuter (Tanjung Malim – Port Klang Line) to the Port Klang Station. From there, it’s a short 5-minute walk to the jetty.

By Car: Navigate to South Port Passenger Terminal (Jalan Pelabuhan Selatan). There are paid parking lots available near the terminal.

Don’t leave the South Port Passenger Terminal without snapping a photo with the giant golden crab statue!

Once you step off the ferry, you’ll notice this Pulau Ketam art installation. This art installation that plays with perspective is particularly creative. Looking from the left side, you will see the word “Pulau”. Looking from the right, you will see the word “Ketam”.

On this island, the electric bicycle is the undisputed "king of the road." Since there are no cars, renting an e-bike near the jetty is the best way to explore the outer reaches of the village without breaking a sweat. Visitors can easily rent an electric bicycle near the jetty. There is a hotel nearby the jetty and some homestay options if you want to stay for the night. The main street is bustling with shops and seafood restaurants.

We stopped by the colourful Hock Leng Keng Temple.

Perhaps the most "Instagrammable" spot on the island, the Rainbow Bridge is a vibrant, multi-colored concrete bridge that cuts through the village. It’s a symbol of the island’s cheerful spirit.

It’s a great spot to watch the fishing boats passing by.

Pulau Ketam is essentially a network of bridges. Since we are heading towards Day Day Come (天天来) Restaurant which is located in the the local residential areas, we needed to pass through 6th and 7th Bridges.

Keep an eye out for a cute letterbox loaded with books. It is a tiny community library on stilts!

7th Bridge is a quieter stretch that offers a more authentic look at how villagers live.

You can’t visit the island without eating seafood! Among the many seafood joints, Day Day Come (天天来) Restaurant is a local favorite. The vibe is authentic, no-frills, and incredibly fresh. When we arrived, we were the only customers there, allowing us to soak in the quiet atmosphere before the feast began.

We ordered a spread of the day's freshest catch including fish, prawns, squids, mantis prawns and clams. The portions were generous, and the flavors were spectacular. Everything was delicious, but if I had to pick a favorite dish, it would be the mantis prawns. The freshness is something you just can't find in the city!

Planning to bring a big group? You can contact the restaurant owner directly to make a reservation and ensure they have the best catch waiting for you. Take note that it is closed on Mondays.

The island can get scorching. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen. Stay Hydrated.  Carry water with you, though plenty of shops on the main street sell cold herbal teas.

Most of all, the best way to enjoy Pulau Ketam is to embrace the "island time" pace.
