[MALAYSIA] The Ultimate Guild to Genting Skyworld Theme Park
Spanning 26 acres with 9 uniquely themed "worlds," Genting SkyWorlds has officially become the crown jewel of Resorts World Genting. Whether you're a thrill-seeker looking to drop 20 stories or a family wanting to step into the world of Ice Age, here is everything you need to know for your visit.
Background of the theme park
The outdoor park was originally announced in 2013 as 20th Century Fox World—set to be the first-ever Fox-branded theme park in the world. In 2018, The Walt Disney Company began its acquisition of 21st Century Fox. During this transition, a legal dispute emerged over licensing and development timelines, leading to the cancellation of the original "Fox World" title. By July 2019, Genting, Fox, and Disney reached a legal settlement. Genting was granted a license to retain and utilize many of the Fox intellectual properties (IPs) already built into the attractions, but the park had to be renamed to a neutral title: Genting SkyWorlds.
Essential tips before your visit
1) Buy the tickets online
While you can buy tickets at the gate, it’s expensive and inconvenient. My recommendation is to book online to save time and money. Tickets are consistently cheaper when booked via the Resorts World Genting website or trusted third-party platforms like Klook or Agoda. I managed to snatch a sweet deal on Agoda which is half the price of normal tickets.
2) Go on a weekday and arrive early
If your schedule is flexible, a weekday visit (except for Friday and public holidays) will save you money and wait time. Arrive first thing in the morning as it might rain in the afternoon. I managed to cover almost all the available rides on a weekday and even managed to go on a ride twice.
3) Download the Genting SkyWorlds App
It’s essential to download the Genting SkyWorlds app. Without it, you’re essentially visiting the park with one hand tied behind your back.
One of the key features that you’ll use is Virtual Queue (VQ). This is the holy grail. Standard tickets usually come with 3 complimentary VQ reservations. This allows you to book a time slot for a ride so you can skip the physical standby line. If you are traveling with family or friends, link all your tickets into one "Group" in the app. This allows one person to book VQ slots for everyone at the same time so you all ride together. Slots for the most popular rides disappear fast. Aim to use your VQ reservations for these "Big Three" if the queue is long: Independence Day: Defiance, Acorn Adventure and Samba Gliders.
Secondly, you get to see live wait times on the app. No more walking across the park only to find a 90-minute wait. The app shows real-time queues for every attraction.
The park layout can be a bit of a maze. The GPS-enabled map will guide you from Point A to Point B without a hitch.
The park uses facial recognition to capture your screams on camera. You can preview these watermarked photos in the app and purchase a Photo+ Pass to download the high-resolution versions instantly.
4) Travel light
Don’t bring bulky backpack. You will need to store your backpack or bag in the locker room right after entering the park. A lot of ride won’t allow any bag. Take a small water bottle with you which you can dispose after finished drinking.
5) Bring a disposable rain jacket
Genting is notorious for its mist and sudden showers. The weather in Genting remains unpredictable, it can go from sunny to misty in minutes! Although in worst case scenario, if adverse weather happens for an hour or more continuously, the park often offers a Rainy Day Guarantee, allowing you a free return visit within 12 months from the date of your original visit. Check the app for status updates! Keep your digital ticket handy to claim this via the app.
6) Take note of height requirement
If you’re travelling with kids, the height requirement might limit their entry to certain rides (refer to the official website for more infor). As a general rule, once a child hits 130cm, they can ride everything in the park, including the major roller coasters. Toddlers below 80cm has very limited options and can mostly only enjoy the Blue Sky Carousel, Bigweld’s Zeppelins, and some interactive play areas.
Attractions
Here are the rides that I managed to cover that day. Some rides might be closed without prior notice during your visit. During my visit, Night at the Museum: Midnight Mayhem and Mad Ramp Peak – Full Throttle Racing were closed.
Take note that ESD Global Defender and Boot Camp Training are listed as Mandatory VQ, meaning you can’t play the ride without VQ.
Studio Plaza
This is the grand entrance of the park. This is where you’ll find the Studio Emporium for souvenirs and the Legends Café for a quick caffeine fix before the madness begins.
1) Independence Day: Defiance
This is a massive 4D "flying theater" where you join the resistance against an alien invasion. It is one of the best ride in the park. It was so good that I went on it twice.
2) Terraform Tower Challenge
This is one of the most thrilling ride in the park. The drop tower that offers spectacular views before a sudden, heart-pounding descent.
3) Alpha Fighter Pilots
This is another adrenaline-pumping ride. Be prepared for 360-degree spins that feel like a space-age washing machine.
4) Acorn Adventure
This is a family-friendly "mine train" style roller coaster featuring Scrat and his elusive acorn.
5) Ice Age: Expedition Thin Ice
This one is a trackless dark ride that takes you through snowy caverns and icy environments.
6) Sid’s Rock ‘N’ Slide
This is a spinning, rocking log ride which is suitable for younger children and families.
7) Samba Gliders
This one is my favourite. It is a suspended hang-glider ride that gives you a bird's-eye view of the Rio world.
8) Rio Carnaval Chaos!
This is a colorful, spinning "tea-cup" style ride themed after the famous carnival. Not my favourite as spinning makes me dizzy.
We didn’t bother to try the Blue Sky Carousel, which is a classic, beautifully detailed double-decker carousel. This is suitable for young children.
9) Epic Voyage to Moonhaven
This is where a disposable raincoat comes in handy. This indoor boat ride ends with a splashy drop at the end.
10) Epic Hummingbird Flyers
This is a gentle flying ride where you can control the height of your hummingbird.
11) Rivet Town Roller
Another spinning, circular ride that lets you control your own rotation. Again, not my favourite.
12) Invasion of the Planet of the Apes
This is a high-tech, 3D trackless dark ride featuring Caesar and an intense battle for survival. It is okay but not as exciting as Independence Day: Defiance.
13) ESD Global Defender
My hubby wanted to try ESD Global Defender but unfortunately, it is closed when it started raining. This ride allows you to control the rotation of your own fighter jet.
We didn’t go for the Boot Camp Training. It is basically a physical obstacle course featuring a rope climbing circuit and a mini-zip line. It would require you to book a VQ slot. We also skipped Bigweld’s Zeppelins.
Plenty of colourful buildings for photo shoots along the way.
Don't forget to drop by the souvenir shop.
Genting also has an indoor theme park if you're interested. Overall, if you plan it right, you'll get on most of the rides in the theme park.
